National Orthodontic Health Month 2020
Posted on 10/02/2020

October is National Orthodontic Health Month! At Loeb Orthodontics, we’re very excited to see your beautiful smile in our Oakland, NJ office. Given that October is known to be an especially candy-filled holiday, we want to stress how particularly important to go over good oral hygiene practices. Your oral health is very important to our amazing doctors, Drs. Allison and Robert Loeb—but so is your (and our) overall health!

Oral Health In The Time Of Coronavirus

Since Halloween is coming up, we’d like to stress the importance of keeping up with your oral cleaning practices and a few tips to keep your braces in tip-top shape!

  • Tip 1: Avoid hard and sticky candy – If you can (we know it’s hard!), try and avoid hard candies (such as jawbreakers and jolly ranchers) and sticky candies (such as tootsie rolls and taffies). These sweet and delicious candies are actually unhealthier than you think! Hard candies can cause you to accidentally chip or break your teeth when you bite down on them and sticky candies are famous for getting stuck in between your teeth which causes a breeding ground for bacteria.
  • Tip 2: Drink more water – If you’re going to insist on indulging on sweets, we also suggest drinking more water while doing so. Although your go-to drink might be sugary sodas, juices, or wine, when eating sweets we highly suggest drinking water in order to remove and wash the sugar down, rather than consuming more sugar via your beverage. Eat and drink responsibly in order to avoid cavities, staining your teeth, and oral diseases such as gingivitis.
  • Tip 3: Make sure to brush your teeth – This might seem like an obvious suggestion, but you’d be amazed at how many people skip this! After enjoying your Halloween candy, please brush your teeth. This extra step will remove much of the residual sugar that’s leftover from your candy on and in between your teeth. This preventative measure will also ensure that less bad bacteria begins to attack your gums and your teeth’s enamel. Trust us when we say that if you take this simple extra step, you won’t regret it.
