When starting your Invisalign orthodontic treatment, you’ll quickly realize that it comes with a list of dos and don’ts. Unfortunately, one of the lists of don’t is a list of foods to avoid during treatment. Don’t fret, though! Our amazing doctors, Drs. Allison and Robert Loeb are here to encourage you every step of the way. Keep in mind that these set of rules are in place for the betterment of your teeth and to ensure great results. Allow our wonderful team at Loeb Orthodontics to assist you during this process—we guarantee that when your orthodontic treatment wraps up, you’ll be very pleased with the results!

The List of Foods to Avoid Might Surprise You!

One of the benefits of the Invisalign treatment is the fact that, unlike traditional metal braces, you can remove the non-fixed clear aligners during mealtimes. So why are there restrictions on what you can eat since it’s not directly causing any harm to your Invisalign clear aligners? Basically, the list of foods to avoid are given in order to maintain the integrity of your teeth. For example:

  • Hard Foods – Hard foods such as hard candies (jawbreakers, jolly ranchers, butterscotch, etc.), hard-shelled breads (baguettes, sour dough, etc.), nuts/seeds, and raw fruits and veggies (carrots, apples, radishes) actually have the ability to crack your teeth. This won’t happen right away, but if you insist on munching on these crunchy snacks, you’ll increase the risk of this happening. Try to avoid or, at the very least, lessen your intake of these snacks to avoid cracking your teeth.
  • Sticky Foods – Sticky foods are usually derived from sugar. Taffies, toffees, caramels, chewing gum, jellies, gummies—the list goes on! These sticky foods tend to get in between the crevices and hard-to-reach-corners of your mouth which in turn, make it difficult to remove via flossing or brushing your teeth. Given that your teeth are already misaligned (why else would you be getting the Invisalign treatment?), this makes your teeth even more vulnerable to the food particles getting stuck. We recommend avoiding these treats altogether.
  • Staining Foods – Whenever you finish up your Invisalign treatment, you’ll want to debut your fabulous smile. If you want your smile to look as fabulous as possible, we also recommend staying away from foods that stain. Please note that this also includes beverages that stain. Foods and beverages that stain are beets, berries, tomato-based sauces, soy sauce, coffee, wine, chocolate, dark teas, etc. Although this is not an exhaustive list, we recommend staying away from these and other foods that may stain so you can one day debut a fabulous and brilliantly white smile!
