By educating yourself on the progression of dental development, you can serve as a resource for your child and teach them the vital oral health habits that will keep their teeth healthy over the course of their life.
The Stages of Dental Development
Did you know that babies start developing teeth before birth? After they are born, the primary or “baby” teeth push through the gums as early as 4 months of age. Typically, the lower central incisors break through first, then the upper central incisors. The remainder of the 20 primary teeth typically erupts by three years old. A child’s permanent teeth should start erupting around the age of 6, starting with the first molars and lower central incisors. This process continues until around age 21. Adults have 28 secondary (permanent) teeth—32 including the third molars (wisdom teeth).
