About Invisalign

When you hear the word “orthodontics”, what comes to mind?  If you are imagining a teenager whose teeth are covered in metal, think again.  Today, orthodonticsinvisalign-logo meansso much more thanks to a revolutionary alternative treatment called Invisalign.  Ifyou want to straighten your teeth and improve your smile a little more discreetly, without braces or wires, Invisalign might be just what you are looking for.

Invisalign is a convenient, virtually-invisible alternative to traditional metal and ceramic braces. Invisalign is a system of completely removable clear plastic trays, or aligners. Compared to braces, Invisalign offers various advantages such as improved oral hygiene, a discreet look, more dietary options, and improved patient comfort. They function similarly to traditional braces, but their clear, flexible plastic is practically invisible!

As the name implies, Invisalign clear aligners are made of almost invisible polyurethane plastic.  Invisalign works the same way traditional braces do, applying carefully controlled forces to teeth to move them into a better position to give you a beautiful smile.  The treatment time for Invisalign varies based on the patient’s individual orthodontic needs, but the amount of time is typically around the same, if not less, than is necessary with metal or clear braces.

What Are The Advantages Of Invisalign?

Rather than being cemented or bonded to the teeth as metal or clear braces are, clear aligners are completely removable. This means you can take them out for important social occasions, for eating, and, most importantly, for tooth-brushing and flossing. However, this advantage can also be a disadvantage, as it means you must resist the temptation to take your aligners out more than is advised if you want straighter teeth. Here are some other advantages of the Invisalign system:

●Improved Oral Hygiene — With a removable orthodontic appliance like the Invisalign aligners, you can brush and floss your teeth as you normally would, making it much easier to maintain good oral hygiene compared to wearing metal or clear braces.

●A Discreet Look — If you consider your orthodontic treatment to be a private matter, or simply feel that metal braces don't fit with your self-image, a practically invisible form of orthodontic treatment might suit you. Invisalign will not be visible in photographs and for important social or professional occasions like braces.

●More Dietary Choices — Some diet modifications are necessary to avoid damaging metal wires and braces . But because you can remove clear aligners when you eat, you can still enjoy harder foods like an apple or a crispy pizza crust, or chewy, sticky foods.

●Comfort — The soft, flexible material of which Invisalign is made will not irritate the soft tissues of the mouth, as metal appliances may sometimes do.

●Teeth-Grinding Protection — If you have a teeth-grinding or clenching habit, clear aligners can function as thin night guards that can protect your teeth from excessive wear, and may provide some relief from jaw symptoms.

Clear aligner technology has been improving over the years and can correct many malocclusions that once would have been too complicated for this form of treatment. Yet there are still some situations for which traditional braces would still be best. We would be happy to discuss this in detail with you and see if you are eligible for Invisalign, so just schedule an appointment with us at Loeb Orthodontics for an initial consultation.

How Invisalign Works

Unlike metal braces, where patients typically receive one set of brackets and wires that will last throughout the entire treatment cycle, Invisalign patients will receive multiple sets of clear, plastic aligners that are custom made to fit comfortably over your teeth. To craft the aligners, specialized computer software helps us design a plan for moving your teeth from their current positions into the best possible alignment. This movement will be broken down into perhaps several dozen stages. Forinvisalign-teen eachstage, the Invisalign company will manufacture two plastic aligners, one tofitover your top teeth and one for the bottom. You will wear this first setof trays for 1-2 weeks, for a minimum of 22 hours per day. You will then move on to the next set ofaligners in your series to accomplish the next stage of gradual movement. You will keep doing this until your teeth are correctly aligned.

In the past several years, new features have been developed to create a specialized form of Invisalign designed for adolescent treatment: Invisalign Teen. Special “eruption tabs” hold the appropriate amount of space open for molars that have notfully grown in. Invisalign for teens also comes with “compliance indicators” built into the aligner material, which fade with wear. This allows parents, dentists, and the teens themselves, to make sure the trays are being worn as prescribed. Treatment with Invisalign can only be successful if this is the case.

Caring for Your Teeth During Invisalign Treatment

As mentioned above, one of the main advantages of the Invisalign system is that the trays can be removed for easy cleaning. So please don't neglect to do this! You'll need to brush your teeth after every meal or snack so that food particles and plaque do not get trapped in the aligners, which could promote tooth decay and gum disease. Your aligners, too, will have to be cleaned regularly; you can do this by brushing them and then rinsing them with lukewarm water.

Also, please keep in mind that while wearing clear aligners is very different from wearing braces, the importance of retaining your post-treatment results is exactly the same. You'll want to be sure to wear your retainer(s) exactly as prescribed after your treatment is completed to protect your investment in a beautiful new smile. If you do not wear your retainer, it is possible for your teeth to move back into their old positioning before treatment.
