At Loeb Orthodontics, we know how important oral health is in relation to a person’s overall health. This is why our doctors and orthodontic team strive to provide quality orthodontic treatments for patients in Oakland, NJ and the surrounding towns including Franklin Lakes, Wayne, and Wyckoff. Our goal is to help our patients attain and maintain optimal oral health. It is vital that you practice good oral hygiene and teach your children proper oral care techniques as well. A way to help your children with their oral care is to first know what happens at different stages of dental development. From there, you can help them have good oral health and teach them proper oral hygiene for their age.

Stages Of The Development Of Teeth

Did you know that babies start developing teeth before birth? After they are born, the primary or “baby” teeth push through the gums as early as 4 months of age. Typically, the lower central incisors break through first, then the upper central incisors. The remainder of the 20 primary teeth typically erupts by three years old. A child’s permanent teeth should start erupting around the age of 6, starting with the first molars and lower central incisors. This process continues until around age 21. Adults have 28 secondary (permanent) teeth—32 including the third molars (wisdom teeth).
